Which paints to choose for Fluid Art?

The development of photography led to a radical change in painting. Many artists abandoned traditional images in favor of abstraction and began to convey emotions through drawing. Fluid Art technique is a modern version of abstract painting.

Features of the Fluid Art drawing technique

The essence of the drawing technique can be understood from the name, the literal translation of Fluid Art into Russian is fluid creativity. The author alternately or simultaneously pours liquid paint onto the base, and mixes it, forming a unique abstract pattern. Using various methods of applying paint, changing the consistency of acrylic, mixing options, and using additives, the artist creates intricate patterns. Having picked up the colors, you can get a picture for decorating the interior.

Millions of fans around the world have appreciated the advantages of painting with liquid acrylic, that is, the Fluid Art technique:

  • an artist can create canvases without talent, art education, training;
  • no need to purchase expensive materials, the basic set consists of a dense base, liquid acrylic, disposable cups;
  • you can create a masterpiece in one session;
  • this is a great way to show individuality, the artist can use his own techniques.

Psychotherapists recommend using the technique as art therapy, the creative process has a relaxing effect.

Materials for Fluid Art

As a basis for a picture, you can use any hard surface – wood, plastic, plywood, MDF, or canvas. Before work, it is necessary to apply acrylic primer to the surface. Art stores offer a large selection of acrylic paints, the durability, and attractiveness of the painting depending on the quality.

Domestic manufacturers produce decent products, for a novice artist this is an excellent choice. Imported paints are more expensive, but they use high-quality saturated pigment and a richer choice of colors and shades. It should be borne in mind that white paint is consumed two to three times more than the rest.

Paint is not enough, air conditioners are needed to obtain a high-quality drawing:

  • The most affordable diluent is water at room temperature. You will save on purchased thinner but will use more paint.
  • Can be purchased at the art store “Acrylic Thinner” factory production, it does its job perfectly.
  • Another option is PVA glue. If you want to add metallics, discard the glue, and use a special thinner.

In the process of work, you will select the desired proportions, mixing water, glue, and conditioner at the same time. The amount of water should not exceed 30% of the total volume. It is important to stir the mixture until smooth. The task of the conditioner is to give the acrylic the necessary plasticity and fluidity, to prevent the appearance of cracks during drying, and to improve adhesion. Thanks to the conditioner, the paintings retain the richness of colors and shine.

Silicone is used to create cells in the picture, the lower its viscosity, the larger the cells. If the silicone is viscous, you will get many small cells. Silicone oil is produced in bottles or aerosol, it is enough to add a few drops to a glass of paint. Acrylic paints are saturated, if you need to reduce the brightness, use a medium. The substance does not affect the density of the paint. Thanks to the addition of a medium, acrylic spreads in oblong strokes. On sale, you can buy a pure medium, as well as with the addition of silicone.

To prepare paints of the desired consistency, it is convenient to use plastic cups of various sizes, from 100 to 500 ml, and to mix the mixture, use wooden sticks left over from sushi, ice cream, or plastic knives. Palette knives are convenient for creating drawings, they differ in shape and size. If drawing is a hobby for you, use a ruler, a knife, or a plastic card. To decorate a picture in an art salon, you can purchase metallics, beads, gold leaf, sequins, sequins, and cracking compounds.
